The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a statutory public body constituted under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, mandated to safeguard and promote human rights literacy and awareness across the country. NHRC conducts its prestigious offline Winter Internship Programme (WIP) 2026, offering students a rare, immersive opportunity to delve into human rights protection, jurisprudence, and institutional mechanics.

Key Responsibilities / Programme Structure

The 4-week full-time offline programme runs from 14th December 2026 to 8th January 2027 and encompasses:

  • Classroom sessions and interactive dialogues with the Hon’ble Chairperson, Members, and senior officers of NHRC.
  • Rigorous research project work focusing on contemporary human rights issues.
  • Curated book reviews and declamation competitions.
  • Screening of human rights films and discussions concerning child labour, human trafficking, health, and elderly rights.
  • Field visits to key statutory and constitutional institutions including the Supreme Court of India, Parliament House, National Green Tribunal, Tihar Jail/Police Stations, NALSA, NCW, and NCPCR.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Students pursuing 5-year integrated law programmes (BA LLB, BBA LLB, etc.) currently in their 4th or 5th year (having completed at least 3 years or VI semesters).
  • Students enrolled in post-graduate legal studies (LL.M.).
  • Candidates must have attained a minimum of 60% marks in Class XII.
  • Total seats: Maximum 100 students (plus 20 waitlisted from Delhi-NCR).

Stipend, Perks & Awards

  • Stipend: Selected interns will receive a stipend of ₹12,000 upon successful completion.
  • Travel Allowance: Interns from outside Delhi are eligible for ordinary second-class train fare to New Delhi and back via the shortest route.
  • Research Awards: Cash prizes of ₹15,000 (1st), ₹10,000 (2nd), and ₹5,000 (3rd) for top Group Research Projects.
  • Special Recognitions: Books worth up to ₹1,000 each for top performers in the Book Review and Declamation contests.
  • Official NHRC Certificate of Participation based on punctuality, discipline, and project submissions.

How to Apply / Registration Details

Applications must be submitted online through the official portal. Applicants must ensure scanned attested copies of the following are uploaded:

  • Class 10th and Class 12th mark sheets.
  • All semester mark sheets of graduation and the current ongoing degree.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP).
  • Scanned Recommendation Letter from HOD/Dean/Principal in the prescribed format (Annexure I).
