Interview Questions & Answers

1. What is the purpose of final vehicle inspection?

Final vehicle inspection ensures that the completely assembled vehicle meets defined quality, functional, appearance, safety, and regulatory requirements before it is released.

The inspection may cover areas such as body fit and finish, interior, electrical functions, vehicle operation, noise, leakage, warning indicators, and other customer-critical characteristics.

The objective is to prevent defective vehicles from moving to the customer or downstream delivery process.

2. How would you handle a vehicle quality defect found on the production line?

First, I would contain the affected vehicles to prevent further movement of potentially defective units.

Then I would verify the defect against the inspection standard, identify the affected lot or production period, and investigate the root cause using appropriate quality tools.

After corrective action is implemented, I would verify its effectiveness and ensure the relevant process documentation or inspection standard is updated if required.

3. What is the difference between line quality and final inspection?

Line quality focuses on preventing and controlling defects during the manufacturing process.

Final inspection verifies the completed vehicle before release.

A strong quality system should not depend only on final inspection. The goal should be to build quality into each manufacturing process so that defects are detected and prevented as early as possible.

4. How do you perform Root Cause Analysis?

I first define the problem clearly using facts and data.

Then I use tools such as 5 Why, Fishbone Analysis, Pareto Analysis, process investigation, and data stratification to identify the actual root cause.

After identifying the root cause, I implement corrective action and verify whether the problem has been permanently eliminated.

5. What are the 7 QC Tools?

The commonly used 7 QC Tools are:

  1. Check Sheet
  2. Pareto Chart
  3. Cause-and-Effect Diagram
  4. Histogram
  5. Control Chart
  6. Scatter Diagram
  7. Stratification / Graphical Analysis

These tools help teams collect data, identify patterns, understand causes, and make fact-based quality decisions.

6. What is SPC?

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a method of monitoring process performance using statistical techniques.

Control charts can help identify whether a process is stable or showing unusual variation. The objective is to detect process problems early rather than waiting until defective products reach final inspection.

7. What would you do if the same defect repeatedly appears during final inspection?

I would first analyze the defect data by model, variant, shift, workstation, operator, supplier, and production period.

I would then identify the source process and conduct a structured root-cause analysis. Depending on the cause, actions could include process parameter changes, poka-yoke, work-instruction improvement, operator training, fixture modification, or component-quality improvement.

Finally, I would monitor the defect trend to confirm sustained improvement.

8. What is the importance of new model quality development?

New model quality activities ensure that quality requirements are incorporated before mass production.

This includes reviewing design requirements, inspection standards, manufacturing processes, trial vehicles, potential failure modes, and quality checkpoints.

Early identification of problems reduces the risk of expensive changes after SOP and helps achieve stable production from the beginning.

9. What is 5S and why is it important?

5S is a workplace organization methodology involving Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.

In an automotive production environment, 5S improves workplace organization, visual control, safety, productivity, and abnormality detection.

10. What is Horenso?

Horenso is a Japanese management communication practice based on:

  • Ho – Hokoku: Reporting
  • Ren – Renraku: Communication
  • So – Sodan: Consultation

It encourages timely reporting, information sharing, and consultation when dealing with problems or decisions.

11. How would you reduce vehicle inspection defects?

I would start with defect data and identify the top recurring defects using Pareto analysis.

Then I would identify the responsible process, investigate the root cause, and introduce corrective and preventive measures. Where possible, I would use poka-yoke and process controls rather than relying only on additional inspection.

12. How do you manage quality inspectors on a production line?

I would establish clear inspection standards, work instructions, responsibility matrices, and performance indicators.

Regular training, skill assessment, layered audits, and feedback are important to maintain inspection consistency. I would also ensure that inspectors understand why a particular characteristic is critical, rather than simply checking it mechanically.
