About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Contributors prepare and review examples that help AI systems improve, including programming tasks, code evaluations, and assessments of whether generated solutions follow technical requirements.

This work lets experienced developers apply practical engineering judgment to cutting-edge AI systems while choosing flexible, part-time projects that can fit around other commitments.

  • Help evaluate and improve AI-generated software solutions
  • Use real programming and software engineering judgment
  • Contribute to a rapidly growing field connecting human expertise with AI development

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Backend Coding Task and Verifier Specialist to create challenging programming tasks for AI systems and develop deterministic verifiers for those tasks. You will design realistic feature implementation, debugging, and bug-fix scenarios, then build verifiers that accept reasonable valid solutions and reject solutions that fail the specifications.

The work requires sound judgment across code quality, performance, automated testing, refactoring, algorithms, data structures, scalable services, and secure coding practices where relevant.

  • Create realistic backend coding tasks
  • Build deterministic verifiers for programming challenges
  • Distinguish valid solutions from invalid solutions
  • Apply backend engineering and code review judgment

What You'll Do

You will develop tasks that reflect practical backend engineering work, including feature development, debugging, and bug fixes. Your verifiers should evaluate solutions consistently and reflect the stated specifications rather than relying on subjective review.

You will also assess implementation quality and technical tradeoffs across performance, scalability, testing, maintainability, and security.

  • Design feature implementation and bug-fix scenarios for backend systems
  • Implement verifiers that reliably test solution correctness
  • Evaluate algorithms, data structures, and scalable service behavior
  • Identify bottlenecks and consider performance optimization
  • Apply automated testing and refactoring practices
  • Use secure coding and security review techniques when relevant

Requirements

Strong backend development experience is required in Python, Java, Node.js, Go, Rust, TypeScript, C++, or a similar language. The role calls for practical experience building scalable services and APIs, debugging software, resolving bottlenecks, implementing complex features, and reviewing code.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills are important. The listed experience level is entry level, while the required skills emphasize hands-on backend development capability.

  • Backend development in Python, Java, Node.js, Go, Rust, TypeScript, C++, or a similar language
  • Experience building scalable services and APIs
  • Experience debugging software and resolving bottlenecks
  • Ability to implement complex features and review code
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills

Helpful Security Background

Security experience is valuable for tasks involving secure coding and application review. Relevant background may include cybersecurity or SecOps work, application security, penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, or security-focused code review.

Familiarity with OWASP or CWE guidance and experience delivering performant software in large-scale codebases are also helpful.

  • Secure coding and application security
  • Penetration testing or vulnerability assessment
  • Security-focused code review
  • OWASP or CWE familiarity
  • Experience with large-scale codebases and performant software

Schedule, Pay, And Eligibility

This is a remote contractor role requiring approximately 15 hours per week, with flexible scheduling. The compensation range is USD $30 to $100 per hour. Confirm the applicable compensation unit and project terms before accepting work.

The role is listed for candidates in the countries specified for this opportunity and requires English-language communication.
